In usual Beyonce-style, Queen Bee slayed the BET Awards tonight, opening the show with a powerful and important performance with Lemonade-hit, “Freedom”.
Set against a backdrop of fire and dancing in a pool of ankle-deep water, Beyonce’s message was clear as her dancers strutted their way down the Microsoft Theatre to Dr. Martin Luther Kings iconic “I Have A Dream” speech.
The unannounced performance received another surprise, as Kendrick Lamar emerged from underneath the stage to spit a previously unheard version of his ‘Freedom’ verse, before joining Beyonce on stage to end the influential and commanding performance with the two super-powers standing side by side.
Beyonce and Lamar have both recently released surprise album drops this year, with Bey’s Lemonade storming to #1 on virtually every single chart around the world and making history as the first woman to chart 12 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 at once. Lamar also released Untitled Unmastered in March this year – a surprise drop consisting of previously unreleased To Pimp A Butterfly demos, with the politically-charged themes continuing throughout.
Kendricks collaboration with Reebok will again extend it’s reach to Australia by the end of this week, direct to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and online from the 1st July. Don’t sleep!
